Everyone was quite thrilled when Microsoft announced that Linux Terminal would be added to windows. This happened due to the partnership between Microsoft and Canonical and it decided that it would be named Bash on Windows. Though it was announced it was not available for Windows users and they didn’t know how to install and use the Linux terminal in windows!

install and use linux terminal on windows

In order to use Bash on windows, people had to install the technical version of Windows 10. But all of this changed with the arrival of the Windows 10-anniversary upgrade.  And you can quite easily install Bash on Windows by following the methods that have been provided below.

How To Install and Use Linux Terminal in Windows

It’s very important to understand Bash before installing Bash in windows. So, what is Bash on windows?

Originally, Bash is bash shell that can be found on Linux. With the partnership between Windows and Linux, Bash on windows was made which formed a complete Linux system inside windows. This used windows as a subsystem and Linux runs on it and it was possible to install this on windows just like a regular application.

There are basically two ways to install WSL and here is how to install and use the Linux terminal in windows.

Note: WSL stands for Windows Subsystem for Linux.

Method 1

Running WSL on windows 11 is rather simple and that can be done with a few clicks. And you will need to utilize a command-line window with Administrator privileges to accomplish this. We’ll use the Windows Terminal for this, but you may alternatively use Command Prompt.

You can learn about How to Enable SSH in Kali Linux here.

Step 1:

Open the start menu and search for Terminal and then right-click on the app and run it as an Admin. You can also press the Windows and X button together, this will open a menu can you can choose Windows Terminal (Admin) from that menu.

Use Linux Terminal in Windows

Step 2:

Run the command wsl –install as it is the default distribution.

This command will enable the WSL and install Ubuntu. The process might take some time, please wait patiently.

Install Linux Terminal in Windows

Step 3:

After the completion of the process, your system will ask for a Reboot. Do allow it. You will be able to use Linux after you do that.

The Reboot part is very necessary as without it you want to be able to use the Windows subsystem for Linux.

If you want you can also run other distributions such as

  • wsl -l -o
  • wsl –install -d Name (example: wsl –install -d Debian).

The second command will let you install a Linux distribution of your choice and you can replace the “Name” of the command with a distribution of your own choice. We a choose Debian. You can install several Linux distributions by running these commands multiple times.

Step 4:

After the reboot, you can just click on the start menu and search Ubuntu. Click on it and you will be able to start using it.

And that’s it. This is the first method that can be used to install and use the Linux terminal on windows 11. Now, comes the second method.

If you want partition managers, here are the 5 Best Free Partition Managers for Linux.

Method 2:

The method is quite slow and complicated in comparison to the first method. And here is how you use this method.

Step 1:

Go to the start menu and search for “Windows Features.” Click on the result to launch it.

Linux Terminal in Windows

Step 2:

Scroll down to find the “Windows Subsystem for Linux” option. Check the box on the left-hand side and click on OK. The system will ask for a reboot, do allow it.

How to Install and Use WSL

Step 3:

Go to the Microsoft Store and search for Ubuntu or the distribution of your choice and install it.

Step 4:

The installation part is very simple as all you have to do is click on Get, just like any other application on the Microsoft Store.

Linux Terminal for Windows installation

Step 5:

After the installation is complete go to the start menu and search for the application. Click on it and you will be able to start using it.

And that’s the second method. Though it might sound easy the first method is better and we recommend you to use the first method.

Now, that was all about WSL 1 but WSL 2 was quite recently introduced, and it’s far quite an upgrade from the first one. So, what is WSL 2?

To know more about the steps to flush DNS, read How to Flush DNS Cache in Windows 10/11, macOS & Linux.

What is WSL 2?

The Windows subsystem for Linux also known as WSL is an upgraded version of WSL1. This new version allows the ELF64 Linux binaries to run on Windows. Its primary purpose is to improve file system speed and to add a similar full system call.

The design of WSL 2 is different from WSL 1 and the Linux binaries communicate with your OS and systems hardware in a different manner. But despite everything thing being different from WSL 1 the experience is quite the same.

You can also run individual distributions on both WSL 2 and 1 and both of them can run simultaneously as well. You can even upgrade and downgrade them according to your wish.

Conclusion

WSL made everything easy and users can access Ubuntu apps without any hassle. As mentioned, before you always have the choice of changing distributions without the need to re-installing everything. We hope this would be of help to you.

Nowadays, almost every keyboard comes with an Fn key (function key). It helps you to control different settings easily but on the other side, you sometimes don’t want to use the Fn key, or maybe sometimes you have used the Fn key by mistake and ended up changing some settings you never intended to do.

This function is useful for some people but at the same time, few people don’t use it. If you want to know what are the uses of the Fn key, this article will help you with that too. Whatever the case it is, we will also tell you how you can lock and unlock your Fn key.

Before we head into the tutorial there are a few things for you to understand.

The Fn key (Function key) can be seen on the bottom row of your keyboard between the Ctrl key and the windows key.

To use the Fn key you will have to use it in combination with another key to change the settings and there are different combinations for every laptop model.

Also, see How to Turn on Closed Captions on Windows 11

Lock and unlock the Fn key

One problem that you will come across is that different laptop manufacturing companies use different ways to lock and unlock the Fn key.

You can lock and unlock the fn key with the help of key combinations. On some laptops, the Fn key will be unlocked & on some, it may be locked.

You can also check the website of your laptop manufacturer to see the accurate combination.

We will tell you some common combinations that you can try out. If the Fn key is locked you can use some key combinations given below to unlock it.

  • Fn + Num
  • Fn + F11
  • Fn + Left shift
  • Fn + Esc
  • Ctrl + Shift + Num
  • Num + F11

If the given combination works on your laptop to unlock the fn key, then you can use it again to lock it. If your laptop doesn’t have a “Num key “you can use the “Insert key ” instead of the Num key.

There is one more way to lock and unlock the Fn key on your laptop.

Every laptop comes with a BIOS ( basic input-output system ) setting. In the Bios setting, you will be able to lock and unlock the Fn key.

To access the BIOS settings, you have to first check the key that will take you to the BIOS settings. Usually, F10 and F2 is the key that takes you to the BIOS setting but you can check this on your laptop manufacturer’s website.

Note:- The BIOS settings give you access to some major setting options you might not want to change or mess with it, so follow the given steps carefully.

Step by step guide to lock and unlock the Fn key

To change Fn settings using BIOS settings, follow the easy steps shown below.

Step 1

The first step is to open your laptop/computer and while it is booting, press the F10 key ( key depends on which laptop you are using, to know which key works for you I will suggest checking the official website of your laptop manufacturer ) now you can press the key that opens the BIOS setting on your laptop/computer.

Step 2

Now on the BIOS setting, you have to enter the configuration menu, to do that you have to use the arrow keys on your keyboard because the cursor does not work on the BIOS setting.

Informative image

Step 3

If you are on the configuration page, go to the “Action key” option by using the arrow key.

Informative image

Step 4

Now if you want to enable or disable the Fn key, use the enter key and then use the arrow key to either enable or disable it .

Informative image

Step 5

Use the arrow key and go to the exit section, as you don’t want to mess with other settings. On the exit section, choose the save and exit option.

Informative image

If the given steps don’t work for you can I will again suggest you first go and check your laptop configuration and also look for the website provided by the manufacturer.

Make sure to check out the list of best Windows 11 keyboard shortcuts to make things easy and make your workflow faster.

In case you have changed some other setting on the BIOS section I will recommend calling the customer support of your laptop.

You can use the Fn keys in many ways but the common functions can be seen below.

  • Adjust the brightness
  • Play, pause, fast forward videos
  • Turn your screen on or off
  • Increase or decrease the laptop volume

These are some common uses of the Fn key they can be pretty handy if you adapt to it.

Now you know what you need to do to lock and unlock the Fn key ( function key ) on your laptop/computer. You can share this information with your friends so that they don’t end up changing the settings or maybe one of your friends is wondering how to enable the Fn key.

When you connect a device to a network, it is configured to remember the network settings for future connections.
This may result in the PC/Device automatically connecting to the network, which might cause problems, especially if you have two independent networks at home.

This article will guide you on how to forget wifi network on Windows 11 or Windows 10 devices.

Let us start by learning how to delete a wifi network from a Windows 11 device. Since window 11 is the latest update we have from Microsoft.

We will discuss four ways to forget a wifi network on a Windows 11 device. We’ll go through them one by one. Let us begin with the easiest of the three methods.

How to forget a network on Windows 11 – Method 1

In this step, we will look at the simplest way to forget a network on a Windows 11 device.

1) Ensure that you are connected to the Network you prefer to forget.
2) In the bottom right corner of the taskbar, click on the Network icon in the action center.

Click on the Network Icon.

3) Select Manage Wi-Fi Connections. This will provide a list of WiFi networks to which you are currently connected.

Select Manage Wi-Fi Connections.

4) Look up the network you want to forget forever.

Select the Network you want to forget.

5) From the drop-down menu, right-click on the network and select Forget.

Click Forget.

6) The network will be removed from the list.

Users should keep in mind that if they remove the network to which they are currently connected, Windows will automatically disconnect the network before removing it.

Also, see how to fix Wifi IP Configuration Error

How to forget a network on Windows 11 – Method 2

We’ll look at a more advanced method for removing a wifi network from a Windows device in this method.
We will use this way to force the Windows device to forget the wifi settings.
To force Windows to forget a Wi-fi network, follow the steps below.
1) Check that you are connected to the Network you need to forget.

Make sure you are connected to the Network.

2) In the bottom right corner, right-click on the Network symbol.
3) Select Network and Internet options from the drop-down menu.

4) Click on Wi-fi.

5) Select the option Manage Known Networks.

Click Manage Known Networks

6) Locate the Network you wish to delete and click the Forget button.

Click Forget.

7) The network will be removed from the list, and the list will get updated.

How to forget a network on Windows 11 – Method 3

We’ll use the command prompt in this method to make the system forget about all the Wi-Fi networks.
The following steps must be taken in order to remove the Network from the Device.
1) Hold down the Windows Key and press the R key. (Win + R)

Press Win + R

2) Type cmd and press Enter. This will launch the command prompt.

Type cmd and press Enter.

3) Enter netsh wlan remove profile name=* i=* into the command prompt.

Type netsh wlan remove profile name=* i=*

4) Press Enter to remove all known networks from the device.
Users should be aware that this method will delete all networks from the device.

How to forget a saved network on Windows 11 – Method 4

We’ll look at how to forget a single network using a command prompt in this method.
1) Press Windows + R at the same time.

Press Win + R

2) Type cmd and hit Enter. This will launch the command prompt.

Type cmd and press Enter.

3) In the command prompt, type netsh wlan show profiles and hit Enter. This will provide a list of all accessible networks on the device.

Type netsh wlan show profiles

4) Enter netsh wlan delete profile name=’network name’ to delete the specific network.

netsh wlan delete profile name=’network name’

5) Press Enter to permanently erase this network.

In a few cases, forgetting a saved network is the wise thing to do. For example, if Windows keeps connecting to the same network every time it comes within range, ignoring the network will prevent it from doing so, allowing you to pick which network you wish to connect to.

If your computer is infected with malicious malware or you have recently changed your settings, you may experience problems with Windows 11 Network Settings. A quick reset of your Windows 11 Network Settings may be all that is required to address your internet connectivity troubles.

If you’re experiencing problems connecting, as already said, resetting your network setup should be your final option. To determine what is causing the network problem, you should update your network card drivers, verify your routers, and perform a full system check.

A lot of Windows 11 users are complaining about sound output issues. It mostly happens because of outdated audio drivers or some misconfigurations in audio settings. If you are also facing issues related to sound output in windows 11 then follow along as I will show you some fixes to solve the problem.

In most cases, the underlying problem with the issue might not be that big. If it is something related to an outdated audio driver or audio settings misconfiguration then it can be easily fixed or if it is something related to the physical device itself then the fixes can be a bit challenging.

Why Sound Output Not Working in Windows 11?

As mentioned earlier, there are tons of reasons why the sound output might not work on your computer.

Here are some of the common issues:

  • Outdated Audio Driver: Your audio driver might be outdated. If this is the case then updating the audio driver will easily fix the issue.
  • Selected the wrong output device: There are chances your device might have multiple output devices. Selecting the wrong one may result in no sound error in Windows.
  • Incorrectly connected audio device: if the audio output devices loosely connected or incorrectly connected to your computer then it could be a reason too.
